AVON & SOMERSET Constabulary Male Voice Choir

Music Director needed!

The Avon and Somerset Police Community Male Voice Choir are seeking a replacement for their Musical Director, who will be retiring after many years of accomplished service. Our choir has been established for over fifty years and is approximately forty-five strong and growing. The members comprise a blend of retired Police personnel and members of the public. We sing four-part harmony and our repertoire includes traditional folk songs, pop classics, spirituals, sacred music and songs from musical theatre.

We perform concerts throughout Somerset, South Gloucester, Bristol and Bath, approximately once a month, raising money for various charities. Our rehearsals take place on Monday evenings at the Police Headquarters in Portishead.

The post requires a person with a first-class knowledge of music and ideally some previous experience of leading a choir. Familiarity with the kind of music we sing would also be an asset, as would a willingness to introduce and teach new music to the choir, the majority of whose members do not read music. That person should have good keyboard skills, show leadership and the ability to communicate, have a stage presence and an outgoing personality. The aim will always be to rehearse and perform to a high standard for every concert. The holder of the post is self-employed and details will be revealed to applicants on enquiry.

Applicants will be invited to attend a rehearsal and lead the choir in a number of our pieces so that a mutual assessment may be made.

Hexham Male Voice Choir

We are a well-established and thriving community choir based in Hexham, Northumberland,

with a proud history dating back to 1948. The choir currently comprises around 25 members who sing in a TTBB format and rehearse weekly at St Aidan’s United Reformed Church every Thursday between 7pm and 9pm.

We provide men from all backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy high-quality singing in a friendly and supportive environment. With a diverse repertoire spanning traditional male voice classics, music from the stage and contemporary popular songs, the choir performs regularly throughout the year both locally and further afield, often collaborating with other choirs and musicians. The choir has a strong tradition of fundraising for charitable causes

and continues to attract new members, supported by dedicated musical leadership and professional

accompanists.

Our relaxed and welcoming culture, combined with a commitment to musical excellence and performance, makes it a valued part of the cultural life of Tynedale.

About you

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Musical Director who can combine strong musical leadership with the ability to motivate and develop a non-auditioned community male voice choir. The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:

• Experience of leading mixed voice and/or single-voice choirs and have knowledge of traditional and

contemporary male voice choir repertoire

• Experience of working with singers of varying musical backgrounds, including those who do not read music and the ability to employ a range of effective teaching and rehearsal techniques

• A willingness to introduce and develop new musical material that will challenge and engage the choir

• The ability to develop the choir’s musical accuracy, performance quality, knowledge, confidence and skills within a TTBB framework

• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and supportive approach to leadership

• A commitment to fostering an enjoyable, inclusive and high-quality musical environment where singers can thrive.

Key Responsibilities

The Musical Director will play a central role in shaping the choir’s musical direction, supporting members’ development and ensuring rehearsals and performances are enjoyable, well-prepared and of a high standard.

Working closely with the Choir Accompanist and Committee, they will help sustain the choir’s welcoming community ethos while encouraging continued musical growth and ambition.

• Provide musical leadership for the choir, developing its sound, confidence and performance standards across rehearsals and concerts.

• Work closely with the Choir Accompanist to plan, prepare and deliver effective rehearsals and performances.

• Advise the Choir Committee on repertoire, concert programming and opportunities for musical development.

• Support the Committee in shaping the future direction of the choir and contributing to its ongoing development.

• Take responsibility for concert content and format, working with the Committee to ensure well-

planned and engaging performances.

• Identify and encourage opportunities to collaborate with other choirs, musicians and guest performers.

• Understand and respond to the needs of choir members, audiences and the wider Tynedale community.

• Help raise the profile of the choir and support initiatives that encourage growth, engagement and

membership development.

• Provide advice, coaching and encouragement to choir members to support their musical progress and

enjoyment.

Rehearsals and Choir Diary

The choir operates a diary throughout the year including forward dates for concerts. The diary is updated and agreed at Committee meetings, which occur 6 times per annum. We rehearse weekly between 7pm and 9pm at St Aidan's Church, Hencotes, Hexham, NE46 2EQ.

Whilst rehearsing and performing all year round, we do have several recesses per year to allow all some well-earned time to rest those vocal chords. These recesses are as follows:

• Easter: 2 weeks.

• Summer: 5 to 6 weeks.

• Christmas: 3 to 4 weeks.

Terms and Conditions

• The role is at self-employed status and remuneration is based on attendance at a fixed rate for each live session, whether a rehearsal or concert and is paid monthly directly into the recipient’s bank account.

• Remuneration will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience.
